Aerospace Medical Association

Sovaris Aerospace is pleased to have its team members active in the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA).

The Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA) is organized exclusively for scientific, educational, and charitable purposes. It is the largest, most-representative professional membership organization in the fields of aerospace medicine and human performance.

AsMA is a scientific forum providing a setting for many different disciplines to come together and share their expertise for the benefit of all persons involved in air and space travel. The Association has provided its expertise to a multitude of Federal and international agencies on a broad range of issues, including aviation and space medical standards, the aging pilot, and physiological stresses of flight. AsMA’s membership includes aerospace medicine specialists, flight nurses, physiologists, psychologists, human factors specialists, physician assistants, and researchers in this field. Most are with industry, civil aviation regulatory agencies, departments of defense and military services, the airlines, space programs, and universities.

Life Sciences and Biomedical Engineering Branch

Sovaris Aerospace team members also have specific roles within a constituent organization of AsMA called  the Life Sciences and Biomedical Engineering Branch (LSBEB) with Dr. Michael Schmidt currently serving as President of the Life Sciences and Biomedical Engineering Branch, while Dr. Bob Hubbard serves as secretary.

The LSBEB’s unique objective and purpose amongst other Constituents of the AsMA is to advance aerospace life sciences and biomedical engineering.  LSBEB does this by establishing and maintaining cooperation between scientific and engineering disciplines, as a means of supporting the application of technology to resolving continuing problems of healthcare, safety, and operational efficiency of personnel working in aerospace and other challenging environments.

At its core, the LSBEB provides a focal point for informal and formal professional exchange among the highly divergent viewpoints represented by life sciences, specifically those of a biomedical and engineering nature related to human spaceflight.  In addition, the LSBEB provides expert testimony in the fields of space life sciences and biomedical engineering, as requested by the Aerospace Medical Association.

Space Precision Medicine Association

Sovaris Aerospace is also a founding corporate member of a new organization associated with the Aerospace Medical Association called  the Space Precision Medicine Association (SPMA) with Dr. Michael Schmidt serving as its founding president.

The Space Precision Medicine Association is focused on advancing the field of precision medicine and personalized medicine across all applications in human spaceflight.  This includes an emphasis on precision medicine advancements in 1) spaceflight clinical practice, 2) spaceflight clinical research, 3)  spaceflight clinical education, and 4) spaceflight community education.

At its core, the SPMA provides a focal point for informal and formal professional exchange among the highly divergent viewpoints represented by spaceflight precision medicine specialists within the context of systems medicine. In addition, the SPMA provides expert testimony in the fields of personalized and precision medicine, as requested by the Aerospace Medical Association.

Sovaris Aerospace

Sovaris leadership is actively involved in advancing the educational and practice elements of precision medicine initiatives within LSBEB with a focus on:

  • Precision (personalized) medicine in human spaceflight
  • Multi-scale omics in spaceflight
  • Pharmacogenomics in spaceflight
  • Experimental design of small cohort multivariate studies in human spaceflight
  • Molecular network analysis, pathway analysis, and countermeasure development
