Spaceflight Advanced Life Support Certification

Summary

Training for physicians, residents, and other advanced care medical practitioners. This program provides effective education in the application of critical thinking and techniques for use in low resource settings.

The Spaceflight Advanced Life Support (SALS) is our most advanced level course. Our 36-hour course is run over 4 – 5 days.  It is open to certified or licensed advanced level medical practitioners who aspire to develop emergency management skills for the short-duration or long-duration spaceflight environment. This constantly-evolving course is highlighted by discussions of new and innovative ideas and the appropriate application of technologies. The learning environment is challenging, stimulating, and fun.

Course Content

The SALS curriculum is written in-house by a team of professionals experienced in spaceflight medicine, general medicine, wilderness medicine, Special Forces medicine, search and rescue, and spaceflight research.  We do the research and find the evidence supporting this unique approach to medicine in spaceflight and other austere settings. The curriculum is comprehensive, complete, and kept current on an annual basis. This is the most relevant and peer-supported medical curriculum for short-duration spaceflight, long-duration spaceflight, and remote environments.

 

Day 1 – Logistics and Introduction; General Concepts in Spaceflight & Wilderness Medicine; Patient Assessment System (PAS); Critical Systems; Spine Assessment and Treatment; PAS Drills

Day 2 – Homework Review; Musculoskeletal; Limb Splinting; Dislocation Reduction Demo and Practice; Skin, Soft Tissues and Burns; Thermoregulation; Cold Injuries; Atmosphere; Anaphylaxis; Small Group BLS Simulations

Day 3 – Homework Review; Lightning; Submersion; ALS Treatments and Meds; Appropriate Technology; ALS Tools and Medications; SAR/Organization; Night Simulation; vestibular system and motion tolerance; microgravity dynamics

Day 4 – Homework Review; Expedition Practitioner/Backcountry Medicine; First Aid Kits Toxins; Spaceflight provider emergency SOPs; Telemedicine, Medical Legal; Summary; Exam

Included Materials

All teaching materials will be at no additional cost. Students will receive the following books on this course:

Prerequisites

Participants must be ALS-trained with current certification, i.e.: EMT-P and ALS trained EMT-I, Physician Assistant (PA), Registered Nurse (RN), or Physician (MD or DO). Others admitted on a case-by-case basis. Upon registration, sponsor will send students the course ID number and password to access their online pre-course materials two to four weeks prior to the first day of their course.
